Als wir am späten Vormittag aus Villalpando in Richtung Benavente losfahren, bremst ein dichter Nebel die Geschwindigkeit der Autos viel wirksamer als der farbige Schilderwald, der sich sonst darum bemüht. Langsam heben sich dann die weissen Schwaden aber doch und die Landschaft neben der vorzüglich ausgebauten Autostrasse gibt sich zu erkennen. Die sonst hier Kaninchen 
oder Mäuse jagenden Raubvögel - Falken, Bussarde, Milane, u.a. - haben ihr Tagwerk noch nicht beginnen können und warten gelassen auf den Lichtposten oder Meilensteinen, ob das Wetter nun wirklich besser wird. Solange das Auto nicht anhält und niemand aussteigt, halten sie es instinktiv für ungefährlich sitzen zu bleiben.
Nicht zum Sitzen kommen die Pilger des Jakobswegs, die auf dieser Route nach Santiago de Compostela wandern, und mancher würde gerne ein Stück mitfahren, aber unser Auto ist voll besetzt. Die Strasse zum ‘Lago de Sanabria‘ biegt dann wieder vom Pilgerpfad ab und führt hinauf zum einzigen Gletschersee Spaniens. Bei gutem Wetter ist er ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel und in der Saison oft so stark besucht, dass der Parkplatzmangel zum Weiterfahren zwingt und man sich mit den Ausblicken von der Strasse aus begnügen muss.
Diese Aussicht ist allerdings atemberaubend: in einer halben Stunde machen Sie den Sprung von der bügelbrettflachen kastilischen Hochebene in eine Bergwelt 
mit dichtem Baumbestand. Am See angekommen hat man das Gefühl weit weg zu sein, in den Alpen oder einem anderen Gebirge. Die Spiegelbilder im Wasser wetteifern mit dem Original: blauer, klarer, zarter… und bei unserem Besuch setzten die Herbstfarben noch besondere Akzente, auch wenn die Sonne schon bald wieder verblasste und wir uns auf die Rückfahrt machen mussten.
In Sanabria und anderen Orten wie Benavente gibt es etliche Hotels, die Sie hier anklicken können.
